The Holy Treasure of the Church of England
March 1st 2011 at 2:58pm
The reformer Bishop and martyr Nicholas Ridley called the homiles the ‘Holy Treasure of the Church of England’. He was worried that we’d be robbed of them and they remain a treasure worth reading – they’re as vital and precious as they’ve always been. I’d encourage you to get hold of them and get reading. They begin with a ‘Fruitful Exhortation to the Reading and Knowledge of Holy Scriptures’ – an encouragement every Christian should hear and take to heart.

God made everything, and it was as easy as opening his mouth and commanding it into being. And what he made is still being revealed to us in unimaginable size. Travelling at 671 million miles an hour it would take billions of years to reach the edge of the known universe – billions of years! And the God who made all that takes a personal interest in us, he reveals himself to us as a loving Father who delights to meet our needs.

Apparently the average Australian spends almost 10 times as much on eating out as they give to help the very poor – in fact they spend more on sweets. At the same time some £1.2 billion people live on the equivalent of less than $1 a day – and some 68,000 people every day die of starvation.

We’re just back from holiday. We spent most of it at a caravan park in the Yorkshire Dales. We were camping in a second-hand trailer tent (thanks Ebay). I want to encourage you to remember that evangelism is ImPortant, Possible and Powerful – and so to Persevere in it. But we’ve done more than rest, we’ve been refreshed by listening to God’s word. We’ve been in the lake district attending the famous Keswick Convention, and I loved it … and thanks to the wonders of the internet, you haven’t missed it – well not completely. There’s nothing like being there in person, but you can watch the sermons from Keswick online right now at www.clayton.tv

The way we ought to respond to poverty is summed up in two words: justice and mercy… Justice, because inequalities exist. Rich nations exploit poor ones. Big businesses break the rules and seem to get away with it. Christians should be involved in promoting justice-it’s a crucial way of caring for the poor and marginalised. But we’re also called to mercy. Mercy because people fall into bad situations and need compassionate help.

I don’t know fully what can be done or how to make a change. But I have remarkable access to the God who does, and who can change it all in a moment if he so chooses. (And just in case we forget God’s power to change things think about the impact of one little volcanic eruption.)
So that’s my challenge coming out of Sunday – to get involved, to get informed and especially, to pray. If you’re up for the challenge …

Somehow it’s not enough for us to acknowledge talent, to enjoy it. For some reason we seem to feel the need to elevate it and those who have it as if they were somehow more worthy than the rest of us. We treat them as gods who walk among us. And then we wonder why so many let us down. Could it be because we’ve misplaced our worship on people who really don’t deserve it?
