Keswick Convention, rest and bible teaching
July 30th 2010 at 1:34pm
We’re just back from a week’s break. It’s great to have a holiday. It’s so refreshing to rest and recover. We’ve been for walks in the Lake District, caught up with friends and family, taken the time to read the paper and just enjoyed a chance to slow down for a week.
But we’ve done more than rest, we’ve been refreshed by listening to God’s word. We’ve been in the lake district attending the famous Keswick Convention, and I loved it.
Being a minister I don’t often get to take part in a service ‘from the pews’, so it was nice to just be part of the crowd. But much more than that, it was refreshing to hear the encouragement and challenges of God’s word. As Don Carson took us through Mathew’s gospel I was struck again by the power of God’s word, and by just how powerful and magnificent Jesus was. I have to say I was also pretty impressed with the gifts God gave Don Carson to explain it. I’m so glad I had the time to listen and soak up solid teaching from God’s word.
Now I know what you’re thinking – ‘well it’s nice that you’ve had a good time, but it’s not much good telling us about it now that we’ve missed it’! But thanks to the wonders of the internet, you haven’t missed it – well not completely. There’s nothing like being there in person, but you can watch the sermons from Keswick online right now at www.clayton.tv – look under the ‘find a programme’ tab and you’ll see Keswick 10 is the first series. All of Don Carson’s sermons are there, and the talks from week two (happening at the moment) and three (next week) will be posted soon.
In fact, I’d like to take the chance to do a shameless plug for Clayton TV. It’s chock-a-block with brilliant bible teaching and answers to difficult questions. Along with the Keswick sermons there’s preaching and lectures from New Word Alive, Jesmond Parish Church, St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney and many more.
Alongside straight bible teaching there’s also discussion programmes of various lengths that tackle a variety of issues. For instance in ‘The Chat Room’ Phillip Jensen and Kel Richards give a half an hour to discuss topics including Art and Censorship, Materialism, Peace, Cohabitation, Gambling, Atheism, Submission and Pornography. Meanwhile the ‘In Short’ series squeezes deep thoughts into three to six minutes on a range of topics from the historical evidence for the resurrection or the historicity of the New Testament accounts of Jesus, to reviews of Avatar and The God Delusion.
If you’re looking for something to show a friend or wanting to grow as a Christian you’ll find plenty of food for thought on Clayton TV. Why don’t you check it out? We may not all be able to take a week out to soak up good Bible teaching – but we can all benefit from investing in learning from God’s word.
