Exodus: The blessing of the Law

March 18th, 2012 (PM) - By: Richard Blayney

How should we respond to God?  How should we approach him?  There seem to be any number of flavours and styles of church nowadays, all with different ways of ‘doing church’… different music, different prayer, different attitudes.  Some Christians are so serious, as if they were expecting the Queen to show up, whereas others are [...]

Exodus: To meet with God

February 26th, 2012 (PM) - By: Richard Blayney

Will obeying God as a Christian make me enjoy my life less? We don’t often ask as blatantly as that, but it’s the premise behind a lot of sin. I think I will be better off and have a better time if I do what I want, even if it’s not what God wants. Deliberate sin is self-serving. But how important is obedience to authority? We have a gospel of grace – we’re not saved by our obedience – so how important is obedience?

Exodus: A problem shared

February 19th, 2012 (PM) - By: Rob Frame

“My mother-in-law has come round to our house at Christmas seven years running. This year we’re having a change. We’re going to let her in.” That’s one of the tamer in law jokes I’ve across. In laws are universally it seems a popular subject for jokes and complaints. I suppose that reflects the truth that [...]

Exodus: The Lord who protects

February 12th, 2012 (PM) - By: Guest Preacher

I love health and safety, just for the news stories it results in: Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council have been telling residents to remove garden gnomes because they are a safety hazard. This Christmas staff at West Norfolk Council were told to remove tinsel from their computer screens because it’s a fire-hazard. Binmen working for Kirklees Council in [...]

Exodus: The Victory Song

March 27th, 2011 (PM) - By: Richard Blayney

The Israelites have just been delivered from years of slavery and oppression and injustice and hopelessness. They’ve been set free by a God who has proved himself to be faithful to his promises and powerful to act. Now, living in the light of the cross, the ultimate mighty act of judgment and deliverance in one, we see that the awesome scenes of the Exodus are just a shadow of what the same God has achieved for us. By default we’re enslaved to sin, powerless to stop ourselves, hopeless in the face of its consequences, chiefly death and judgment from God. But God frees us from sin, makes us alive, gives us sight, brings us from darkness to light, gives us eternal blessing and hope, eternal life, life to the full. How could we not sing?
