Exodus is not just a great story of salvation. It’s not just a story about what God’s people are saved for. It’s not just a story about a sovereign, loving God who is powerful and worthy of worship. At its heart it’s a book about who God is. ‘Let my people go, so that they may worship me.’ But who is this God? What is his name? Yes, he is powerful to act and to save and to achieve his purposes, but who is he? Who is this God who sends plagues and who leads by cloud and fire, who gives law and yet who suffers (a) with his people as they suffer and (b) because of his people as they are unfaithful to him? Who is the God who calls himself Yahweh (‘I am who I am’)?
